Offering Christ through older adults
October 21, 2010
One the fastest and largest growing segment of our population are persons between the ages of 55-75. This is because of the aging of the large Baby Boomer group. This group is characterized by lots of energy, a desire to serve in meaningful ways, seeking clarity about the things of God, wanting to leave a legacy, and very much wanting hands-on experiences in serving others.
The Church can and must offer these opportunities, and most of all we do so by “Offering Them Christ.” It was joy to be a part of the launch event for Older Adult Ministries in the Maryville District on Thursday, Sept. 30 at First United Methodist Church of Alcoa. This was attended by more than 175 persons, about 25 over the goal!
The day was spent with Charles Maynard telling stories, Beth Burkey singing and leading us in songs, and Sam Venable from the Knoxville News Sentinel entertaining us.
Here I am, pictured with (from left to right) Bob Bostick, our conference coordinator of older adult ministries; Beth Burkey, who incidentally is the daughter of the late Rev. Robert Walker from Holston; and Bob's wife, Phyllis Bostick.
Look for me to blog and post more photos from my travels all over Holston.
