Reflecting on my time with the SEJ bishops
January 10, 2011
It was a joy to be the host of the Southeastern Jurisdictional College of Bishops Jan. 6-7. These are challenging times when many people in our communities choose to no longer affiliate with a church of have any connection with the Christian community. Many people have lost their jobs or reason for living, struggling to make sense out of a world in which the tried and true is changing all of us. If there ever was a time that people need the Lord, it is now. All of this is happening while the United Methodist Church is in the grip of a 40-year decline in membership and a decline in average worship attendance.
The bishops of the Southeast are committed to helping these people to know and experience God's love. We met to talk about how we might help local churches to claim the mission of making disciples that come alongside Jesus in His mission of transforming this world. I trust that many of you are aware of the Call to Action recently released by the United Methodist Council of Bishops. We have committed ourselves to helping our local churches to become places where effective and fruitful work on behalf of Christ takes place. We ask you to join us in this endeavor.
