6 Things to Know about November

For United Methodists, November is a month for charge conferences and Advent preparation. It's also the month that we gain an hour of sleep (at 2 a.m. on Nov. 5) and reduce some of our meetings to make way for the holidays.

Here are a few more dates to take note of during Month 11 in Holston Conference:

Nov. 1: Open Enrollment.
Clergy and lay staff eligible to participate in the Holston Conference sponsored health insurance plan may enroll or make changes to their current plan until Nov. 30. Find out more.

Nov. 5: Way Forward.
What’s going to happen to the UMC as it grapples with issues of human sexuality and related judicial rulings? Rev. Carol Wilson and Rev. Kim Goddard, delegates to the 2019 meeting that’s expected to be pivotal, will discuss and answer questions at a forum hosted by Church Street United Methodist Church in Knoxville (4-6 p.m.).

Nov. 10: Kit Collection.
Mission leaders have asked churches to collect and deliver "School Kits" to their district offices by this date, in a conference-wide effort to help Puerto Rican students displaced by Hurricane Maria.

Nov. 11: Open House.
The two-year lease for the Sevierville facility now known as “The Connexion” has been extended, and the Congregational Development Team is preparing to ask the Holston Annual Conference to purchase the building and acreage in June 2018. To rally support, the Rev. Rusty Taylor and crew are inviting the public to Open House events on Nov. 11 and Dec. 16, 1-4 p.m. (Address: 1250 Middle Creek Road.)

Nov. 26: United Methodist Student Day.
If you’re United Methodist, it’s likely you know someone – in fact, a lot of people – who have benefited from United Methodist scholarships or loans. Here’s your chance to invest in a better world. Write a check to your local church (with “United Methodist Student Day” on the memo line) or give online.

Nov. 28: Wildfire Anniversary.
One year ago, lives were lost and changed as smaller fires that started a few days earlier were energized and driven by winds to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Holston pastors and congregations were on the scene both as survivors and responders. The work continues today. An anniversary event is expected to be scheduled by Holston’s partners in wildfire recovery, Mountain Tough and Appalachian Service Project. More information to come.
