PARROTTSVILLE, Tenn. (April 27, 2017) -- It’s a unique idea and one whose time coincided perfectly with Earth Day on Saturday, April 22.

For the past three years, members of Harned's Chapel United Methodist Church have given away free flower and vegetable plants to anyone dropping by the church pavilion on the appointed day. It just so happened this year’s event fell on Earth Day.

Current church Rev.  Don Jones and wife Christy brought the idea to Cocke County from their previous appointment at Daisy United Methodist Church in Soddy-Daisy, Tenn., near Chattanooga.

“We had a church member there who was also a landscape artist,” said Rev. Jones on Saturday, “and he developed our church grounds beautifully. Our church was on the main highway and very visible and the beautiful flowers, trees, and shrubs soon became the place for people to come and take special pictures, such as on prom night.”
