TRIGG, Va. (July 11, 2018) -- This year the Robert Sheffey Memorial Campmeeting celebrates its 40th year at the current location July 6-11. The Sheffey Campmeeting is a revision of the old Wabash Campmeeting which dates to the earliest of Methodism in Holston Conference.
The meeting began with a youth emphasis on Friday and Saturday, similar to a mini-Resurrection. A local contemporary band, "The Group Trio," led worship with speakers geared to young people's needs. Youth participated in an overnight "Extreme Survivor" retreat on Friday through midday Saturday. Attendance was 130 on Friday night and 145 on Saturday, with 55 youth spending the night.
On Sunday night, the "Church Sisters" presented a concert as well as led worship. The Rev. Kim Goddard preached the sermon. Attendance was more than 325.
On Monday night, the "Giles County Community Singers" shared a concert. On Tuesday, "The Farleys" led in worship. On July 11, Robert Sheffey (also known as Charlie Henderson) will share his memories from early campmeeting days.
Many commitments to a relationship with Jesus Christ have been witnessed. Many prayers have been prayed, and people have experienced the power of God in their lives.
Organizers are kicking off a financial campaign, "40 More Years," to replace the current Tabernacle structure. The replacement cost is estimated at $65,000. The Board of Directors has already pledged more than $11,000. Total commitments and pledges to date are more than $15,000.
Robert Sheffey (1820-1902) was a well-known -- and quite eccentric -- Methodist preacher and exhorter in Southwest Virginia. He was instrumental in leadership at the Wabash Campmeeting and remembered for his power in prayer. His grave adjoins the present Campmeeting in the cemetery of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church on the Eggleston Circuit. Sheffey's birth cabin is preserved and has been relocated from the Ivanhoe Community to the campground.
The Campmeeting is located in Giles County, Virginia, at 131 Sheffey Memorial Road. For photos and videos, visit the Robert Sheffey Campmeeting Facebook page.
