Bishop Mary Virginia Taylor and the Rev. Rusty Taylor will travel to South Sudan for the first time on a nine-member team departing April 4.
The Taylors will visit the region where Holston Conference sent its first team in March 2006 before signing a partnership covenant with the East Africa Conference in February 2008.
Since then, Holston has sent numerous mission teams, mission workers, and funds to Yei, South Sudan and surrounding areas. The Taylors will be joined on the 14-day trip with fellow first-timers Rev. Nathan Malone, Rev. Charla Sherbakoff, and Paige McClure.
Veteran travelers on the team include Rev. Mike Sluder, Lori Sluder, Danny Howe, and Jane Robinson.
The purpose of the trip is to visit the site of the new Grace Home for Children orphanage; witness the signing of a Knoxville District covenant with Logo, South Sudan; provide clergy and United Methodist Women training; and discuss future direction of Holston’s work in South Sudan.
