KINGSPORT, Tenn. (March 14, 2017) – Camp Bays Mountain will not open this summer as anticipated but will open for the fall retreat season, the camp’s board announced.
Construction delays interfered with the camp’s first full summer season, according to the board’s statement: “We cannot with full confidence meet our goal of completing the necessary construction by our June 4 proposed opening date.”
Camp leaders said the decision to delay the opening is difficult, since early registrations have already been received and summer staff has already been recruited. Registered campers will receive refunds.
“We believe that campers and parents would rather have a completed facility than one which is still under construction during summer camp sessions,” organizers said.
The statement continued:
The decision to postpone will in no way slow our efforts to complete the initial phase of construction. Regular construction updates will be posted on social media, our website, through our email list and through our United Methodist district newsletters. Many volunteers have invested hundreds of hours so far, our architect and contractor have worked very hard, and we have received over one half of our $4.5 million dollar goal toward establishing camp. We celebrate these vital steps.
Remember, our goal continues to be to offer the region a gift of camp which will be accessible to all persons, of quality construction and which will be sustainable. As soon as we schedule a Grand Opening we will invite you to the celebration. Our hope is you will understand and support this decision to postpone our opening in our effort to insure the sound completion of a quality camp to be proud of for generations to come.
