Many congregants describe their faith communities as "just a small church," when small churches carry most of the ministry in Holston Conference.
A General Board of Global Ministries report shows that 77 percent of Holston's 906 total churches are classified as small, with 200 or fewer members.
To assist small churches with their unique challenges, Holston Conference has created a new event, "GREAT Small Churches," to be held April 17-18 at Gray United Methodist Church in Johnson City District.
Speakers include Bishop James King of the South Georgia Conference, Bishop James Swanson of the Holston Conference, and the Rev. Royal Speidel, General Board of Discipleship evangelist in residence.
Keynote speaker is Julia Kuhn Wallace, former director of the Small Church Ministries, General Board of Discipleship. Thirteen workshops will be offered, including “Maintaining Evangelism Energy” and “Building Team Leadership in Rural Churches.” Regular program fee is $35.
