Holston responds to urgent need for flood buckets

Leaders of the United Methodist Committee on Relief have reported that flood bucket supplies at the Sager Brown Depot are nearly depleted. Holston Conference is involved in an effort to help replenish flood buckets at Sager Brown in Louisiana or send them directly to Iowa, where weeks of severe weather have caused widespread devastation since May 25.

UMCOR staff member Kathy Kraiza reports: “Since June 17, we have shipped more than 5,000 flood buckets in response to requests from annual conferences in the midwest. We are down to only 200 flood buckets in stock, and we are only a few weeks into the hurricane season.” Sager Brown distributed 4,008 buckets in all of 2007.

Holston groups wishing to contribute to the effort should first download the UMCOR flood bucket list here, then choose one of the following actions:

  • Contact Rev. Harry Howe if you are in the Virginia area, to learn how you can transport the buckets to Project Crossroads in Marion, Va. (Phone: 276-782-3339)
  • Deliver buckets to Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Knoxville, Tenn., now through noon on Tuesday, July 22. Deliver buckets during daylight hours at the back of the Cokesbury Center building.
  • Contact Missions Coordinator Bill Daugherty at (423) 253-4801 for other possibilities.
