Holston prays for General Conference

ST. LOUIS (Feb. 21, 2019) -- Holston Conference joins United Methodists all over the world this week in praying for and watching the proceedings of General Conference.

The special session of the denomination’s top policy-making group convenes Feb. 23-26 in St. Louis, Missouri. The purpose will be to receive and act on a report from the Commission on a Way Forward, authorized to examine paragraphs in The Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and to explore options to strengthen church unity.

Representing Holston Conference at the session will be 12 elected delegates, half clergy and half lay members, plus four alternates. Bishop Dindy Taylor, Holston’s resident bishop, will also be attending, as well as Holston communicators, the Rev. Tim Jones and Annette Spence.

A blog has been created to help Holston members connect quickly with news and information. Visit GCNews.blog and sign up for a daily email providing highlights beginning Feb. 22.

live video stream of proceedings will be provided by United Methodist Communications beginning Saturday, Feb. 23.

Holston delegates were bathed in prayer by clergy attending Convocation, Holston’s annual continuing-education event held Feb. 18-20 in Pigeon Forge.

“The thing that we hope you know the most is that we trust you, because we elected you,” said the Rev. Sarah Varnell, during the prayer ceremony at Music Road Convention Center on Tuesday morning, Feb. 19.

The Rev. Kim Goddard, delegation leader, accepted a prayer scarf with threads representing the individual prayers of clergy.

“Can I just say that in my years of ministry I have never felt as supported and prayed for as I have over the last several months,” Goddard said.

“This is what the power of community looks like. I’m not going to be looking at these individual strands and saying, ‘Is that a prayer for the One Church Plan, or the Modified Traditional Plan, or the Connectional Conference Plan, or the Simple Plan, or the gracious exit?’ I’m just going to be knowing these are the prayers for your church and your delegation, and I’m not sure we can ask for anything better than that.”
