Luminary will provide blessing for nearby boating community

TEN MILE, Tenn. (May 18, 2015) -- Regardless of the kind of boats they may prefer, sailors on Watts Bar Lake will have the opportunity to hear the message “God go with you” Saturday, June 6.

The Horizon Yacht Club is sponsoring a Blessing of the Fleet Service beginning at 10 a.m. The club is headquartered at Blue Springs Marina on the eastern shore of the lake, in a cove near river mile marker 547.5. Pastor Chuck Griffin of nearby Luminary United Methodist Church will be the officiant for the service.

“We hope to bring the boating community together, adding a little spirituality to our boating season in the process,” said John David Curry, the club’s commodore. “All are welcome -- bring a sailboat, bring a power boat, bring a canoe, we don’t care.”

The service is rooted in the Mediterranean tradition of blessing fishermen’s boats before the fishing season started.

Boaters will gather in the cove near the yacht “Donna Lou Too.” To receive an individual blessing at the end of the service, boats will slowly pass near the Donna Lou’s bow as they head northwest back to the main channel.
