Psalm 48 NIV
1 Great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise,
in the city of our God, his holy mountain.
2 Beautiful in its loftiness,
the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon[b] is Mount Zion,
the city of the Great King.
3 God is in her citadels;
he has shown himself to be her fortress.
4 When the kings joined forces,
when they advanced together,
5 they saw her and were astounded;
they fled in terror.
6 Trembling seized them there,
pain like that of a woman in labor.
7 You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish
shattered by an east wind.
8 As we have heard,
so we have seen
in the city of the Lord Almighty,
in the city of our God:
God makes her secure
9 Within your temple, O God,
we meditate on your unfailing love.
10 Like your name, O God,
your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;
your right hand is filled with righteousness.
11 Mount Zion rejoices,
the villages of Judah are glad
because of your judgments.
12 Walk about Zion, go around her,
count her towers,
13 consider well her ramparts,
view her citadels,
that you may tell of them
to the next generation.
14 For this God is our God forever and ever;
he will be our guide even to the end.
I was a museum guide for a short time. I enjoyed explaining the exhibits and answering questions. As a guide, I had to know my facts be ready to give accurate answers. I wanted to be a good guide and not lead anyone astray.
A guide or advisor is in a position of trust. Who would you want to guide you through life?
God is our guide. In verse 14 of Psalm 48, we’re told, “For this God is our God forever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.” What does a guide do? One definition says, “a person who advises or shows the way to others.” God definitely does that for us. He shows us how to love others, live as His children, and grow in Faith. Unlike a human guide, He doesn’t only guide for a short time. Our lives are extremely important to God. His guidance is everlasting, enduring, and forever.
Psalm 48 is a song of praise and a reminder of God’s greatness. As I have noted, it is that last verse that speaks of God’s guidance that stands out to me. People need guidance. We often make wrong choices and follow wrong paths. Heavenly guidance is available for all. God is not some distant and unapproachable being. He is the heavenly Father whose hand clasps ours and takes us on life’s journey. He won’t abandon us if our foot slips, if we try to go in the wrong direction, or if we are afraid. God is the guide whose love for us means he is with us all the way.
God, please remind me to follow the path you have set before me. Help me to follow you and also share your love with all I meet. Thank you for your guidance and your Holy Word. Amen
