Ruth 4:18-22
The Genealogy of David

18 This, then, is the family line of Perez:
Perez was the father of Hezron,
19 Hezron the father of Ram,
Ram the father of Amminadab,
20 Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,[a]
21 Salmon the father of Boaz,
Boaz the father of Obed,
22 Obed the father of Jesse,
and Jesse the father of David.

We recall that Ruth, a Moabite woman, stayed by the side of her Israelite mother-in-law Naomi as Naomi returned to Bethlehem.  “Where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay.  Your people will be my people and your God will be my God.” (Ruth 1:16b)
In Bethlehem, Ruth supported her mother-in-law by picking leftover grain from the fields of Naomi’s kinsman Boaz.  By chapter 4 Ruth and Boaz marry and Ruth gives birth to a son, Obed.  Naomi, who had lost everything in Moab, now had a family again.  Her friends said to her, “Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a guarding-redeemer.  May he become famous throughout Israel.” (Ruth 4:14).  The blessings from Naomi’s friends proved correct.  This same Obed, who would bring such joy to his parents and grandmother, went on to become the grandfather of King David.
I find it encouraging that God used Ruth and her family not just in that moment, but way beyond what Ruth’s wildest expectations could have been.  We can’t know how God will use the fruits of our labors, whether it be the people we raise and/or influence, the work we do in our communities, or any of the other imprints we make throughout our lifetimes.
I am impatient and am eager to know those downstream results.  I know I need to get over that.  I need to trust that God will take the gleanings from my work and my interactions and use them in ways I cannot currently imagine.  When that happens, I hope to look down from heaven and be pleasantly surprised.

Lord, we see what you have done for Naomi and Ruth.  You recognized their faithfulness and rewarded it in ways they could see and long-term ways they could not.  Surprise us Lord.  Use what we do and who we are to bless the world now and in the future.  Permit us to be instruments of your good.  Amen
