Course of Study

The Course of Study (COS) is a basic theological education program of the DOM (Division of Ordained Ministry).  It is provided for those who are licensed as local pastors who are unable to attend an approved seminary.

Participants in the program should have completed candidacy for ordained ministry, the studies for license as a local pastor, and have been approved for license by a District Committee on Ordained Ministry (DCOM).

The Course of Study is offered at regional Course of Study Schools on the campuses of eight United Methodist theological seminaries for both part-time and full-time local pastors and extension schools (weekends) that are primarily for part-time local pastors.  Primarily Holston pastors attend Duke Divinity School at Duke University or The Candler School of Theology at Emory University.  Both Perkins at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX., and Garrett Evangelical Seminary at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL., offer the COS in spanish.

No more than 0ne-half of the Course of Study (10 classes) may be taken on line or by correspondence.

Advanced Course of Study

Local Pastors and Associate Members who complete the requirements of the Course of Study may continue their preparation for full connection conference membership and ordination as an elder through an Advanced Course of Study program.  For more information see ¶ 324.6a-d., in the 2016 Book of Discipline.
